Histopathology

Subcontracting to Ori Brenner BVSc, MRCVS DACVP.

Routine procedures:

Fixation: Immerse tissues in 10% neutral buffered formalin at a minimum rate of 1:10 tissue sample: fixative volume.
If specific areas need to be identified, clear landmarks should be provided.
Embedding: Paraffin.
Sectioning: Paraffin blocks are cut at 4-5µ.
Staining: Hematoxylene and eosin (HE).
HE is the routine diagnostic stain used in pathology and allows the pathologist to determine if the tissue is normal or not. If not, the histopathologic alterations are described. For inflammatory processes, HE staining is usually sufficient. However in some cases other stains may be of benefit. There is a wide array of special stains, both conventional and immunohistochemical which may be used as the need arises.
Report: A standard text report includes description, diagnosis and a comment. If required, photomicrographs (pictures) and figures accompanied by a legend can be prepared.
